The now incorporated Township of the former North Society lands was for all practical matters going to be named "Pachaug", but instead, as far as records show, without much discussion was named Griswold. A name at the time of partisan popularity and of no local significance, derived from Roger Griswold, the Federalist war Governor of Connecticut who died in office in 1812. The exact date of the incorporation of Griswold has proved a matter of some difficulty to discover. Records show nothing more definite than the date on which that session of the General Assembly convened, the second Tuesday in October, 1815.
