The Slater Library was the last gift of John F. Slater to the village to which he had been so intimately connected most of his life.

The founding and the housing of a public library here had long been in his mind. His plans had been carefully worked out, but the building was not completed at the time of his death, in 1884. His wishes were carried out by the executors of his will.   The library building is a small but beautiful structure, built of brown-stone and granite, at a cost, in that day of low prices, of $16,000. It consists of a library and a reading room, and a hall above. It was well equipped with books and periodicals, and opened to the public during the year 1884.

Provision was made for the support of the library by the Slater estate, for a term of years, in a declining scale so that at the end of the term its support should rest upon the public for whom it was created.

Residents of Griswold and Lisbon may use the Library, all you need is a library card.  Residents of other towns may use the books if you have a card from your hometown library.
