Veterans Memorial Park

Location:     Ashland Street & Hill Street

    Directions:  Click Here for Directions

Veterans Memorial Park was encouraged through the diligence of the Veterans Memorial Park Committee and so is dedicated to the veterans of Griswold and Jewett City. It is located on the site of what as the Ashland Mill which burned down on March 12th 1995.

In Veterans Memorial Park on Ashland Street over Pachaug River sits  a Berlin bridges which were popular not only with town highway officials but also with mill owners, who needed to provide well-built crossings for employees and for moving materials around the millyard.

Lenticular pony truss  Overall length: 65 feet     Built in 1886

The Ashland Mill Bridge is Listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This four-panel lenticular truss is typical of the Berlin Iron Bridge Company's small spans. It is especially notable because it retains so much of its original material, including not only the trusses but also its tapered floor beams, iron-rod railings, and wooden deck. The Ashland mill and millyard are now gone: the area was turned into a public park a few years ago following the demolition of the fire-damaged manufacturing complex. Because the bridge's deck is so deteriorated, it is now closed to all traffic, and a modern footbridge has been built nearby to take its place.

Veterans Memorial Park is available for anyone who would like to host an event at this picturesque site.  Click here for a Rental Application Form

The village of Glasgo is a section of Griswold  and was the home of tool inventor Isaac Glasko, a man of mixed Native American and African American heritage, purchased land in 1806 and established

a blacksmith shop in what is now the center of Glasgo. His blacksmith shop was constructed near the intersection of Route 165 and Route 201. He harnessed waterpower to a trip hammer which is a mechanical hammer that sped the manufacture of farming and carpentry tools. Glasko specialized in whaling implements, for which he held several patents. His harpoons, lances, spades, and mining knives were well known in ports of New England. Glasko was a highly respected craftsman and his work had an excellent reputation up and down the east coast. Isaac's daughter, Eliza Glasko attended Prudence Crandall's academy for young ladies in Canterbury from 1833-34. His house still stands, although it has been considerably altered. Isaac Glasko's final resting place with his s wife is in a quiet burying ground near the center of the village that now bears his name now known as Glasgo.

Activities on Glasgo Pond

Paddle out along this narrow, winding pond, many overhanging branches drape out over the water. To get away from the houses and bass-fishing boats, paddle east and squeeze under the Route 165 bridge. Other than the moderate noise from Route 165, the southeastern section feels like a northern wilderness area where you almost expect to hear the wail of a loon, a species absent from Connecticut's inland waterways for many years. Expect to see: wood duck, forested hillsides, shrubby shoreline.
